Summer Trek to Dodital, Dharwa Top and Yamunotri
16 senior school students along with Mr.Rakesh Alfred and Mr.Appu Dey went on an 11 day trek to Dodital, Dharwa Top and Yamunotri from 29th April to 9th May 2006. Dharwa Top is a plush meadow at an altitude of 15000 ft above the sea level in Uttarkashi district.
Before starting this 80 km trek in the thick rhododendron and pine forest, we also did a stretch of about 12 km of White Water River Rafting on the Ganges.Luckily for our team, this summer, the hills were coveredwith a thick blanket of fresh snow even in May. It snowed regularly for three days while we were in the region. We were greeted by intermittent rains hailing along the way, and, a lot of snow on the top to play in. The boys had an unforgettable time in the snow playing and also learning a bit about snow craft and certain climbing techniques from the able instructors who accompanied us on this trek.
At Dodital, the boys had this rare opportunity of spotting the endangered Golden Himalayan Trout that is found in the sweet water lakes at an altitude of 10,500 ft. We could also spot during our trek, four different varieties of Rhododendrons: white, purple, red and pink.
This was an achievement for all the 16 boys who made it to Dharwa Top in good time. We also went to the Yamunotri shrine soon after the doors had opened and our boys had the chance to bathe in the hot sulphur spring. It was a unique experience for the boys who were new to this. The boys were from Classes 8 and 9 and many of them were out for the first time. The sole objective of this moderate trek was to introduce the boys to adventure, camping in the wild, pitching their own tents, winding them in the morning and other jungle activities like rock climbing, abseiling, river crossing, rappelling etc. to name a few.
The boys had a first time experience of bridge slithering or abseiling in other words from a 75 meter bridge on the Ganga. Regular campfire, open river bath in Assiganga and a rare opportunity of getting up close and personal with the bountiful and ever changing nature were also the features of this memorable and action packed trek. The boys returned refreshed after their school term and loaded with unending stories to narrate and a lot of good memories to cherish.
