PRINCIPAL’S REPORT – 2008

Our Chief Guest Lt. General Ajai Singh Ji, I offer my most cordial welcome to you on behalf of all of us present here. I would also like to extend a very warm welcome to the President, Mayo College General Council, His Highness Maharaja Gaj Singh of Jodhpur, Your Highnesses, Members of the General Council, Member of the District Administration, parents, distinguished guests, old boys, staff and students.

It is indeed a momentous occasion and it gives me a great pleasure to receive so many of you who have travelled long distances to be with us on the afternoon of this very Special 125th Prize Giving.

We have been eagerly looking forward to this day. We know that it is a unique occasion since it not only helps to showcase the achievements of the students but also helps to renew old ties of friendship. We extend a very warm welcome to the Silver Jubilee 84 Batch which has assembled for the reunion in such a large number with families from all over the world. They have decided to create a corpus which other batches may also join, for promoting excellence in the faculty. It is indeed a very laudable objective.

I would like to congratulate President of General Council HH Maharaj Gaj Singh of Jodhpur for being invited as Chairman, Jal Bhagirathi Foundation working of water harvesting in Marwar region by Bill Clinton Global initiative to Hong Kong for a 2 day conference. He is leaving immediately after PG for Hong Kong.

Before I read my report, I shall like to mention that this is my happiest year in Mayo College. The College has taken tremendous strides and good news has just kept pouring in this year.

As far as Results are concerned, for Class XII, for the last eight years, we had a batch average between 77-79%. This year we broke through the 80% barrier and I am happy to announce that batch average for class XII was 82% with 10 out of 62 boys scoring above 90%. In Class X, we are between 76-78% batch average for the last three years. This year we had 16 boys above 90% as compared to 14 in each of the last two years.

This summer, it was an honour for Mayo College to be invited to a Triangular Polo Tournament in England to represent India. The students of Mayo College used the British horses and on the British grounds beat Britain and France.

This July, we were fortunate to be blessed by His Holiness The Dalai Lama who was very kind to come to school and address the assembly.

The creditable achievement was winning The Jack Gibson Debate this year where the participating teams included Doon School, Dehradun, St. James School, Kolkata, Millennium School, Dubai, etcetera.

A unique achievement was to be the joint winner of The Indian Public School Conference (IPSC) Football Tournament after perhaps twenty five years with schools like Motilal School of Sports, Rai and TNA, Gangtok, Daly College, Indore, etcetera participating. We have 6 of our boys playing for the IPSC Football Team in the School National Tournament from 5th December.

This year is also the Centenary year of our legendary Principal Mr. JTM Gibson. I am very happy to inform that The British Council had accepted our suggestion and the guest speaker Mr. Mick Waters came to Ajmer and addressed Mayo College and Mayo College Girls’ School on October 17. The British Council organized the talk in Delhi which was attended by old boys, some members of General Council and by Principals from various schools in Delhi. Mr. Mick Waters was full of praise for Mayo Boys’ and Girls’ School. He said after visiting Ajmer that the legacy of Mr. Jack Gibson is alive in the two schools.

Professor James Myall from Sydney Sussex College, University of Cambridge, mentioned that he remembered that the quality of questions asked by Mayo College students after his talk were better than what he experienced in many universities. He further offered to have a preferential student admitted to Sydney Sussex College every year to commemorate Mr. Jack Gibson’s centenary. What a great incentive it would be for a Mayo College student to be admitted to the University of Cambridge every year.

I am happy to announce that the Bond University of Australia, which is the leading private university, has offered 50% tuition fee scholarship to Mayo College for one boy to study either Bachelor of Information Technology or Bachelor of Business Systems. This scholarship for 2 years is worth over 40,000/- Dollars.

I am also happy to inform that the German Embassy has agreed to place a German teacher in Mayo College and so, we shall be able to start German as a subject upto Class X from April this year.
